Stenciling 101

Good overview of stenciling as an art expression, highlighting with dexterity its primary urban nature without leaving aside other broad areas it covers.

The volume works well as an stenciling 101, with generic sections highlighting some historic aspects, albeit sometimes with a slightly unbalanced sense of priorities or omissions in the timeline. The few texts are fairly well taken care of, and cogent. A good selection of testimonials ranging from artists narrating their motivation, to documentarians talking about their work, as well as some good basic technical tips, offer a good narrative to expose general aspects of the medium.

While the book may lack a specific methodical sampling and a deeper critical/analytical aspect, it is quite recommendable as an effective snapshot of the topic, and hints at the praiseworthy labor that the [...] is set to accomplish.

Excellent overview of stencil street art

I have appreciated street art and creative graffiti for over 30 years. Really good street art is sometimes hard to find because it often disappears or is defaced by a rival artist quickly. Because so much of street art is critical of the status quo, most urban governing people don't like it and many cities spend a great deal of money to cover it up within 24 hours. In my own city, over $600,000 a year was spent to clean it up until the economy went bad. The good got destroyed with the bad.

The cool thing about stencils is that you gotta be good at drawing to do it well and you have to understand how to use negative space creatively. Couple that with an ironic sense of humor and clever messaging and you've got yourself some serious social commentary. We've all heard the adage that a picture speaks a thousand words and in the case of stencils, it does it succinctly and artistically. With over 350 artists' work represented in this book, you get a fabulous view of stencil art from more than 25 countries. Because this book was published in 2008, it doesn't have the latest, but it does have some of the best.

Nutrition & Diet Therapy Textbook

I was very pleased with the layout of the book. It is easy to understand. The back of the book also has like 60 pages of different foods with protein, fats, etc listed. It makes doing my diet journals and diet reports for class very easy. I would recommended this book to anyone who is taking Diet and Nutrition.

About the Author
Bill Sharp grew up in the small towns of Lacombe and Barrhead, Alberta, Canada, where he became interested in becoming a policeman at an early age. In 1968 he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and after basic training he worked at nine detachments located in the Metro Vancouver and West Kootenay areas of British Columbia. All of his career in the Force was in uniform general duty where he served as a first-responder, patrol supervisor, watch commander and a member of the Emergency Response Team (SWAT). Among other awards he has received in his service, he was honoured by the Insurance Corporation of BC for his dedicated impaired driving enforcement and the instructing of DUI investigations. Sharp retired from the RCMP in 2011 and he and his wife live in Langley, BC.

funny. interesting. enjoyable read

I was drawn to the book cover and immediately recognized that iconic yellow stripe + red serge as Canada's national symbol. The story of a Mountie is interesting to me so i gave it a go plus author is a fellow BCer. Bill Sharp writes about his 40 plus years serving as a general duty police officer with RCMP which these days is nearly unheard of. What a career! Starts in the 1960s to his recent retirement. An enjoyable read from cover to cover. Laugh out loud funny. Very interesting. Informative. Some well known publicized stories in there too. Felt like an exclusive peek inside the life of a police officer. Stories are detailed and well-written. I'm hoping author is willing to share with us more stories I'm sure he has up his sleeve from his uniquely colourful long-serving career!

A Great Read

This is a great read about Bill Sharp's career as a police officer in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. You couldn't make this stuff up! He writes about his experience policing small communities in British Columbia as well as larger cities. It's entertaining and funny but also gives the reader a good look at the serious side of policing. He is a wealth of knowledge about life as an RCMP officer. Know someone who might be thinking of becoming a police officer? Have them read this for a first-hand insight into what it's really like.

Good But Not Great

I read the book "Goth" before purchasing this manga. I absolutly loved the book (which I suggest to anyone into this genre)and thought that this manga would go along with it as a visual story telling. However I was disapointed. This manga leaves out a lot in the story and even changes some of them just so that they can fit it on the comic book style reading.
All in all this is an ok manga if you understood and have read the original novel. But you won't be missing much if you don't read it.

Unexpectedly excellent

For most, goth is a style, a fascination with darkness while standing safely in the light. In Otsuichi's "GOTH: A Novel of Horror", it's little more than a word that could only hint at the macabre nature of these characters and stories. GOTH is more accurately described as a collection of stories connected by the two main characters. Morino is quiet, virtually silent and goes to virtually any lengths to isolate herself from her classmates and repel those who are attracted to her pale beauty. Kitazawa is a kindred spirit, but one who has learned to put up a cheery, joking front that hide his true self. ("Can you teach me to smile like that?" Morino asks when they first meet.) Kitazawa has an innate ability to track down and uncover serial criminals of the most horrific kind. Morino has a similar knack for being singled out as a victim. This is how they are drawn together throughout the book. It is not quite a romance. Both would find the other's death as fascinating as they would their own.

The stories focus on perpetrators of incomprehensibly unspeakable crimes: a man who assaults victims to collect their hands, the serial murderer of pet dogs, an avid gardner who becomes fascinated with planting children alive in graves. Otsuichi lets us look into the minds of those who are most often described as mindless monsters. He is neither judgmental nor sensational. He leave both to the prattle of reality TV coverage and local gossip that serve as little more than background noise.

According to the book's afterword, Goth was Otsuichi's first attempt at the genre known as "light fiction" in Japan. Traditionally, these are works of simple plots and marginal writing quality, suitable to pass the time on trains and subways. In this effort, the author failed. Goth won one of Japan's most prestigious mystery writing awards. Even though this is not a "graphic novel" in the sense that another review implied (there are no pictures, it's all words), the images are vivid and the descriptions are truly immersive. He is a superb writer and storyteller. The endings of his stories are utterly unique. For a reader, it's like driving the last few miles of a twisting mountain road. But after a last turn where you expect to see the familiar lights of home, you discover that there is nothing under your wheels but darkness and you're left with that tingle of giddiness in the split second before you begin to fall.

There is a good chance that the success of this book may result in a movie deal in Japan. Sadly, the world has only known one director who could have done this book justice and that brilliant British immigrant to Hollywood passed away in 1980.

Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography is bizarre, abstruse ("a word which here means 'cryptic'"), and truly entertaining. Would you expect anything less from the mystery man behind A Series of Unfortunate Events (The Bad Beginning, The Ersatz Elevator, etc.)? Virtually every detail of the volume has Snicket's indelible mark, from the book jacket (reversible to help readers disguise this "extremely dangerous" and "objectionable" autobiography) to the copyright page text to the intentionally blurry and bewildering black-and-white photographs appearing throughout. An apparently false obituary for Lemony Snicket sets the stage for what turns into a series of mind-boggling bundles of coded information passed from hand to hand, gleaned from newspapers blowing through streets, pages from a journal addressed to "Dear Dairy," blueprints of ships, minutes from secret meetings, and a lot of edited and disputed commentary. The question is, do we finally discover the meaning of VFD? You know you're not going to get a straight answer. But any fan of Snicket will have a lot of fun trying. A certain maniacal glee went into the creation of this archly humorous volume. Beginning with the suggestion on the front flap of the dust jacket to disguise its dangerous contents (Make use of this book's reversible jacket immediately), readers will know they're in possession of something deliciously left of normal. The jacket reverses to display a hilarious parody of Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events covers, entitled The Pony Party! and featuring The Luckiest Kids in the World! by Loney M. Setnick. Meanwhile, the contents lead readers on a merry goose chase. The 13 (naturally) chapters burst with red herrings, non sequiturs, mysterious letters, diary entries and so on not to mention fading black-and-white photographs with captions such as Total strangers and W?H?O? The narrative makes for a most satisfying tease, larded with such Snicketisms as For various reasons, portions of this chapter have been changed or made up entirely, including this sentence. It would seem that Snicket's obituary from the highly unreliable Daily Punctilio (which is reproduced in the book) is premature, and that there will indeed be more installments about the Baudelaires, though nothing is certain in the end and readers are left nearly as in the dark about Snicket as they were at the start. Of course, this is all part of the fun, guaranteed to make the author's fans itch to get their hands on a copy of this devious romp masquerading as an autobiography. Ages 10-up.

Grade 4-8 Beneath a simple, seductive Tyvek cover resembling manila and plain brown paper, snippets of Snicket's life appear in 13 chapters of notes, letters, newspaper clippings, songs, photos, telegrams, screenplay excerpts, steamship tickets, and meeting minutes. Daniel Handler prefaces the material. It is not stated who compiled this information, although there is a speculative tale of how it reached the publisher. Snicket begins with a letter about the inaccurate report of his death published in The Daily Punctilio and comments on a folk song detailing his abduction at a young age by the V.F.D. It is noted that all members of this organization were snatched at an early age, chronicled with black-and-white photographs. Subsequent documents from and about characters in "A Series of Unfortunate Events," such as Poe, Olaf, Esme, and others, may or may not reveal their connection to V.F.D., which is used as an acronym for many different organizations, events, and things. Allusion is made to a solid connection between the Snickets and Baudelaires; clearly they are in imminent danger and in need of the many disguise suggestions provided. The book's high-gloss pages have the look of a scrapbook with many gray pages reminiscent of early photocopies. References are made to Kafka, Fitzgerald, and children's authors. The greatest unauthorized autobiography ever written

There are few sounds in this world that please me quite as much as to be working at the children's reference desk of my library and to hear a parent's reaction to the title of this book. When their small ward picks it up and offers it to them, there is sometimes a definite pause before the parent says aloud, "Wait... unauthorized autobiography? That's not possible". It's one of the perks of my job. I first bought and read this book in 2002 after reading only four books in "A Series of Unfortunate Events". I can tell you right here and now that that was a huge mistake. Not the buying the book part, but the reading it after having only reviewed four of the books in the series. I've since then read the rest of the books currently published and, prior to reading this, I suggest you do the same. Though the book will make a bit of sense here and there, you're really only going to understand it fully after you've at least gotten through, "The Slippery Slope". Just a warning.

Now this book is unlike any other you're likely to come across. And though paperback editions of this puppy exist, I'm telling you right here and now that it is worth the extra money to buy the hardback. If you get the paperback you're missing out on one of the greatest publishing operations available to child readers everywhere. The cover of this book is reversible so that if your enemies should notice it in your hands, you can make them think that you're simply perusing Lenoy M. Setnick's, "The Pony Party" (part of "The Luckiest Kids in the World!" series). Inside, the book's a devilishly clever collection of stories, bits of correspondance, burned newspaper articles, lost telegrams, and various mysterious photographs. Kids who crack the book's codes, hints, and family trees will begin to understand a lot more about the people the Baudelaires have been in contact with over the years. Did you know that Esme Squalor only married Jerome because of where he lived? Or that Mr. Poe has a sister that caused Lemony his job? Did you know that the film, "Zombies in the Snow", may have contained a hidden message that Uncle Monty completely missed in Book #2?

For adults like myself, the book is just as wildly interesting as it is to kids. Adults will probably get a lot more of the in-jokes, though. In a photograph of a ship's crew, every sailor has the name of a famous children's author. I think I only caught on when I read the name of Sailor Creech next to Sailor Danzinger. There's even a transcript of the moment the schism arose in V.F.D. in the first place. Most impressive of all, oddly, is the index in the back. If you've the time and inclination, a careful inspection of it will reveal further clues to the Baudelaire/Snicket/Quagmire drama. I also loved the fact that the photographs in the book range wildly in time and era. Most of them seem to originate in 1932, but there are 1960s shots, Victorian era prints, and some pictures of Lemony that must have been made relatively recently. Heck, even the publication page in the front of the book reveals tiny statements and clues for people to pore through. It's an intense experience, reading this book.

I think the real lure of V.F.D., as shown in this book, is that anyone can join regardless of age. And that may be where the real intrugue for kids lies. Children who've always wanted to belong to a secret spy organization and who love "A Series of Unfortunate Events" will probably read this book to shreds. They'll get the references. They'll understand the nuances. They'll be the most appreciative of audiences. But it is absolutely imperitive that you read the other books first. This isn't your standard story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. It's more like a collection of mismatched documents all working together to give kids some insight into a thirteen volume mystery. It's a truly enjoyable experience.

Smoke, dust, and mirrors

At one point during the reading of this book I was sorely tempted to sit down with pencil and paper and try to pull together the astonishing number of clues that were being dropped like biting nails on every page. In the end I decided that I had better things to do - but that only means that I was busy doing other things, and not that it wouldn't have been interesting or worthwhile.

This book contains the same wit that makes A Series of Unfortunate Events so powerfully readable, and it is absolutely full of clues regarding V.F.D, from who is in it, what its function is, and hints at what caused the schism.

When I put the book down I couldn't help but be amazed at the brilliance at work here. It's a story within a story within a story...like one mirror directed at another, its depth is endless.

It seems fairly obvious what V.F.D. stands for, given the clues we have, but knowing "Lemony Snicket" and the delight he takes in confusing situations, I highly doubt that it will be that simple. Heck, Count Olaf might turn out to be the good guy in all of this! Who knows?

The inside cover of the dust jacket was hilarious. "Lemony Snicket" really has a terrific sense of humor. I'm very, very grateful that these books were published; they are an absolute joy to read.

Funniest Snicket book yet

The title of this book is a bit misleading. Don't expect to get the life story of Lemony Snicket- what you're going to get is a bunch of documents and photographs in the style of the "messages to the editor" that Snicket leaves in the back of each of the Series of Unfortunate Events books. This book is basically a collection of a lot of different sources that give you hints as to what V.F.D. might be, and some glimpses into the life of Snicket. This book DEFINITELY does not stand on its own... only readers of the Series of Unfortunate Events will understand it. In fact, this book would be a total waste of time even for readers of the Unfortunate Events series except that this book is extremely funny. If you're a fan of the past books, this one'll make you roll with laughter. And don't forget to take the jacket of the book off... there's even a joke involved with that. All in all, if you're an Unfortunate Events fan who can't wait for the next book to come out, this'll hold you over just fine.

This novel, set in Amherst, Massachusetts, tells the story of a promising
philosophy PHD student, Sam O’Connor, who takes a life-changing journey

Maharishi to create and teach a class on Being which integrates Eastern
and Western philosophies. The subsequent success of Sam’s lectures at
Amherst College propels him onto the national stage, but midway through
a book tour tragedy strikes, and in its wake Sam fades quickly into obscurity
and nine years of deep introspection. Sam has a chance encounter with
Julian Driscoll, a philosophy major at Amherst College, and they begin
meeting at a local caf� to discuss enlightenment, consciousness, and the
causes of suffering. Julian coaxes Sam to once again confront his destiny.

About the Author
Steve began Transcendental Meditation in 1974. Impressed by his experiences and the knowledge of spiritual evolution as described by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Steve became a teacher of the TM program in 1976. He attended MIU in Fairfield, Iowa, graduating with a BA in Philosophy in 1981. He met his future wife, Kay, at the university. They were married in 1982. Over the next 24 years Steve and Kay started and ran three different businesses while raising their two sons in New Salem, MA. They currently live in Wellfleet, MA. This is his first novel.

Sharing the Light

This is the story of a young man's successful quest for enlightenment. Through his inner experiences in meditation, and the knowledge imparted to him by his spiritual mentor (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of the Transcendental Meditation program), he awakens to the truth of who he is.

A philosophy student and then a university professor as the story unfolds, Sam O'Connor begins to share the fruit of his enlightenment with his students and with the broader world through a successful popular book. Then a shocking incident - he is shot by a crazed fundamentalist and comes close to death - throws him off his path. Viewed from the outside, what we see is that he withdraws from teaching and the university, and spends the next decade as a semi-recluse, living a quiet life with his wife and sons and growing a garden.

But that is not the whole story. I think the author is showing us a necessary stage on the spiritual path, when early and sometimes "flashy" experiences are quietly assimilated and integrated ever more fully with the reality of life in the world. Thus, Sam O'Connor gains an even greater strength and certainty than he had as a popular and charismatic young professor. When he interacts with young students in the college town (where he still lives), he is discovered to be unusually knowledgeable and inspirational, a kind of local sage. Invited to speak on campus, his lecture on Walt Whitman and the evolution of consciousness - which we get to "listen" to in the penultimate chapter - reveals the depth and beauty of Whitman's vision and at the same time Sam O'Connor's spiritual insight and maturity.

I believe the genre of spiritual fiction - stories of the spiritual quest, like Hermann Hesse's classic Siddhartha - will become more common as more and more people embark on their spiritual journey in the attempt to understand themselves and the world. Knowledgeable and well-written books like this will be there to serve as guides on the path.

And by the way, the tale of how Sam met and married Amy is a fine and tender love story neatly woven into the texture of the book. -- Jack Forem

Engaging

Not being a person who practices transcendental meditation, I quickly began to wonder how the author could engage me. The mechanism Steven Verney used was to put me in the care of characters I began to care about. They took me through a wide open door that opened into considering realms beyond their personalities into the mysteries of thought and possibilities that are there for us all. There were times when this book overwhelmed me, when I noticed myself skimming to find out what would happen to the people. That being said, that was my loss. It's a book that will give you back more than you put in. It's not a book to sell back. It's a book to think about. It's a book to sit with when one is in a mood to savor and go beyond the words. I finished this book, but will be revisiting it.

Delightfully engaging

What a wonderfully full journey into infinity. This is a story about synchronicity, Self mastery, TM, tragedy, and ultimately the fulfillment of love. Verney writes with a wry wit, which often made me laugh out loud at the humanness of us all and feel shock and at how easily tragedy can enter out lives. I loved Verney for both his storytelling, humor and his philosophy, and I envy his delicate and clear explanation of the spiritual path. In his own light and engaging way, he made it clear to me, that we're not human beings on a spiritual journey, but spiritual beings on a human journey.
