Matthew Knott has been writing code for as long as he can remember; from marveling at moving pixels on a BBC Micro to writing ridiculous text adventures for his Mother on an overheating ZX Spectrum 48k. Matthew has been a professional software developer for the last 12 years, the last 6 of which have been spent in the education sector where he has now entered the sometimes-scary world of management, although when they see the mess he made of the budget that won’t last long. Matthew’s work and hobby is basically the same thing, but when he’s not working, he is loving life in a beautiful part of Wales with his Wife Lisa, and two kids Mikey and Charlotte.

Not ready for prime time

This is my third pass at this review--every draft has resulted in fewer and stars. I am an experienced Windows developer who recently transitioned to the Mac. I purchased this book to learn my way around Xcode and the Swift programming language. The book certainly started out well, and I gave it five stars. However, I came across so many typos that my second review suggested that Apress should be embarrassed to release a book in this condition. However, the typos hadn't affected the sample code, so I only knocked off a star.

I have now come across code that throws an error at compile-time. I thought I might have mis-copied the code from the book, so I loaded the author's sample code--and got the same error. Now, I can understand that books on new technology are often written before the technology is finalized, and that late breaking changes to the technology can cause errors of this sort. It happens, and that's what the errata page on the publisher's web site is for.

So, I went to the errata page, and--there is no errata submitted for this book. None for the code that won't compile, and none for the typos that riddle this book. That is simply unforgivable, not to mention unprofessional. I'd suggest looking elsewhere for an introduction to Xcode.

This is a good book for an experienced Mac programmer.

Unlike the very negative review by Fleming, i read the entire book and did (most) of the examples. I didn't have too many problems. This is a good book for an experienced Mac programmer. Also, the illustrations are very helpful. However, the book assumes you're familiar with both Macs and with Apple cant, a strange English dialect that has many strange words that aren't defined. Worse, the book format is very demanding: the chapters and the related code are tooooo big, even for a programmer who started programming in Java on Windows in the 1990s. Hopefully the new version of the book will address some of these issues.

Disaster with XCode7

I'm a beginner to XCode who started reading and trying out code examples given with a big hope. from chapter 4 it was a disaster. Error popped up with incompatibility with XCode7. Writer must have some responsibility of review those codes with new releases as book has released very recently. Totally discouraged.

Cupcakes (including: Vanilla and White Cupcakes; Chocolate and Dark Cupcakes); Microwave Cupcakes; Muffins (including: Refrigerator Muffins); Fairy Cakes and Butterfly Cakes; International Cupcakes; Cupcakes for Special Occasions; Icings and Frostings; Flour and Cake Mixes; Other Small Cakes; Historic Muffins and Cupcakes.

A recipe for a gluten-free flour mix is given so that all the cakes can be made gluten free. You also get recipes for cake mixes that can be stored long term or which can be used as substitutes for commercial cake mixes.

There is a complete chapter on icings and frostings, with recipes for over 70 kinds given. The final chapter goes into the history of muffins and cupcakes, with recipes from the 18th and 19th centuries, including the very first cupcake recipe from America.

In all there are 360 recipes and almost 50 illustrations throughout the book.

Cupcakes, muffins, fairy cakes and more

This is a really beautifully crafted book.
It contains a huge amount of recipes and I think there are some new, innovative ideas that I will spend time choosing and then making. I am unsure if I can make just one set at a time as I want so many! It will be the perfect excuse to hold little tea parties and I know that local bazaars and charity events will really appreciate these treats.
Despite the interesting nature of these recipes they seem to be easy and perfectly straightforward to make. That is a relief and a bonus.
The cover is very pretty and the contents easily live up to this and I think will make lovely displays too. I think the owner of this book can do some real showing off without too much effort and I do enjoy appreciation for my entertaining. It gives me pleasure to see others enjoy themselves too.

Certainly a complete book on the construction and drawing and architecture of light construction as the title says. I have two or three other books on the subject but this may prove to be the best reference when I am drawing floor plans and making sure I include everything. I do building sketches in my work as an inspector and have a interest in construction. Fun book, Well worth the price.

This was my textbook in my Technical Drawing Class. The descriptions and explanations were very thorough. I felt the textbook delved deeper into the subjects and was a good reference source in addition to my instructor lectures. Overall, I thought the book did a good job in explaining architectural drawing. In fact, I kept the book.

In "Industrialization and the Transformation of American Life: A Brief Introduction" Jonathan Rees condenses into 128 sharply focused pages the broad historical and technological forces that spread rapidly across the country after the Civil War and ushered in the modern world. Rees identifies two key factors of industrialization -- mechanization, and the division of labor (brought to their fullest expression in Henry Ford's assembly lines) -- that combined in a variety of forms to create 20th century America. He makes stunning connections between large technological and economic developments, such as the spread of railroads that unified the country, and their ripple effects on the lives of capitalists, workers, and consumers. His explanation of the historical processes that have shaped American life as we now live it is neither polemical nor apologetic. He identifies both benefits and costs, without grinding an axe. But his account is disturbing, especially as he applies his methods of analysis and assessment to our ongoing digital revolution. We are a more efficient people. But are we happier? Is technology bringing us together, or driving us apart? Lucid, balanced, cleanly written, and logically organized, this is a must read if you want to understand the times in which we live.
