Story with hope
By Margaret Hicks
I have a love/hate relationship with Jennifer Ashley's books-- I love reading them so much that when I look at the bottom of the screen on my Kindle and see that the book is 90% read, I hate her for having me so completely hooked. Bad Wolf (despite having the worst of the Shifter Unbound titles IMHO) is no exception. I loved this story and had been left wondering about Broderick and the feral pack, so I got some answers I had wanted. I like how the continued theme through these books is redemption. People and shifters alike find a new life that is redeeming and rewarding in ways that their past was not. There is always the promise of hope, even with Shifters living with prejudice and segregation.
That being said, I will mention that this Shifters Unbound book seems to have way more typos than the other books in this series. The English teacher in me wanted a hard copy that I could mark up with my red ink pen. I found the poor editing distracting.

Bad Wolf - Can Be Read As A Stand Alone
By Daniel Bowen
Bad Wolf (Shifters Unbound) is the story of Broderick (wolf shifter) and Joanne (human). We meet Joanne in the previous story, Lion Eyes. She is Bree's sister and once Bree was mated and brought into Shiftertown with Seamus, Joanne tagged along.

So as this story starts Broderick and Joanne have already had interaction. They live together and are around each other. They both acknowledge the attraction but Broderick hasn't acted on it with the mating frenzy. Of course like any alpha shifter male he ignores the urge and acts dumb - That Joanne can't be his mate. Oh no. Not. But Tiger still insists. Does the advice from Tiger sink in? No. Not at first. Like any guy it takes awhile for the brain to kick in to what his body is telling him.

So my complaint is there is no romance between Broderick and Joanne. Their relationship is already established. I sort of pieced their relationship together. She acknowledges Broderick but he doesn't acknowledge what she is to him. Okay. That's what we're working with. And yet an adventure and threat of losing each other and they're now involved. Romance? Um. . . . No.

So Broderick proves himself again and comes out ahead. There is mystery and a good plot going. My question was. . . If the sword kept talking to Broderick and 'allowed' him to hold / use / work with it. . . . In order to promote this story plot. .. . Then why is there that brand of a celtic knot on Broderick's hand . . . . And why isn't he stepping up to prove himself as another guardian? Now I can understand if he feels unworthy and isn't literate enough. But his mate would help and he is open to being taught. That was shown. So I have to wonder IF the sword would pick someone else. The story ends before a new guardian is made. So the plot device here is left open and unconcluded.

A guardian spot is open, the sword for this spot has chosen to work with Broderick. . . So then what? Are we left to wonder?

A big part of my three star review is the repetition of explaining everything in the series. I can't place which series number this is but if anyone was to pick up this book as a stand alone, they could. There's that much background on the shifters, what shifter towns are, who the Fey are to the shifters, the Guardians and their network, relationships, lack of tech for the shifters, etc. etc. etc. and don't forget relationships of which shifters are mated to who and where they live and how their houses are built and all that other detail and such. . . . *grab a breath* Did I mention it all? Because this book repeats all that background for anyone new to this series to feel that they didn't miss anything. It's all explained. So for those like me that have read every single book I'm skipping. Yup. I did skip a lot of this story, it was that repetitious. *sigh* - Dan's Wife

EDIT - Mistakes noted and I'll leave them as they are. Obviously I can't keep track of the relationships of the shifters and mates and families and like I said on another review in this series awhile back, a glossary should be done. I'd also like to point out the premise for this relationship follows the same path in Dark Wolf by C. Feehan with Dimitri and Skyler. Relationship already happened, no romance, and it takes a threat to one's life to get the mating done.

Great Novella with Sexy Shifter and Lots of Cameos
By Sheila M
"It was hard to protect a woman who went charging ahead before Broderick could check that the way was safe."

THE STORY: Broderick McNaughton is a wolf shifter who lives in the Austin Shiftertown. Readers of the Shifters Unbound series will know that the shifters are treated as second class citizens, forced to live in designated town with few rights. They are magical creatures having been created by their enemies the Fae to be entertainment and weapons of war.

Broderick knows something is wrong when he awakens in a strange place. He realizes that he has been abducted. The people who abducted him want information about the Shifters. Broderick escapes and returns to the Austin Shiftertown and his sort of girlfriend Joanne Greene. Joanne is human and her relationship with Broderick is complicated. The two are circling around one another at the same time that they are attracted to one another. Broderick's abduction brings them closer together as they work together, use Joanne's skills as a hacker, to discover who is threatening the Shifters.

The mystery includes a murdered Guardian, appearances by and updates about Austin Shiftertown residents and a real partnership between the main characters.

OPINION: I really liked this novella. The story is snappy and I was surprised at the resolution. It was a definite suspense/mystery story. With unexpected appearances and surprise resolutions, this book is a treat for fans of the series.

Ashley does a great job of keeping the overarching storyline of the series moving forward without allowing the plot to become too complicated.

Broderick is a fun hero. Sexy and brave, he doesn't think much of himself at times because he is not part of the leadership of the Shiftertown. This story, however, shows that he has an important role and that he is important to those around him. He is a shifter who does his job. I especially liked that he is interested in what Joanne does because it is important to her and wants to know more about it only because of the importance in her life.

Joanne is a character that has grown. I liked that Ashley has redeemed this character who was a negative character when first introduced. There is much here about characters not being simply good or evil. Throughout the series, many characters who had negative appearances have their motivations explained, their opinions changed and become better people because of their life experiences. Joanne is smart and able to take care of herself but has learned a lot and has a more humble view of the world.

This is a bridge book which finishes up some loose storylines and allows the story to continue in future books. It is a good one.

WORTH MENTIONING: Readers of LIon Eyes will be happy to have some additional resolution regarding that story here. Also, I was especially pleased to see Tiger again. He happens to be one of my favorite characters and plays an important role in this story.

FINAL DECISION: I loved this novella. Broderick was a compelling hero who seemed kind and compassionate but with a hell raising side. The romance is not as strong here as with other of the books in the series, but the appearances by other characters makes up for it.

CONNECTED BOOKS: BAD WOLF is book number 7.5 in the Shifters Unbound series. A reader doesn't have to follow the whole series to enjoy this book. This book is most closely connected with BEAR ATTRACTION and the novella LION EYES so readers might enjoy BAD WOLF more if those are read first.

STAR RATING: I give this novella 4.5 stars.
