Recommended with reservations to the chapters about blogging at Linkedin.

Stephanie Sammons' book " Linked to Influence: 7 Powerful Rules for Becoming a Top Influencer in Your Market and Attracting Your Ideal Clients on LinkedIn" is an good book but it has one flaw.

The author does not dictate,
"... These rules are meant to serve as strategic guideposts for you to follow..."

but encourages the reader to create his/her own Linkedin-portrait/presentation,
"... Think about the people who have influenced you. Why do you follow them? What have they done for you? How have they impacted your life?..."

I appreciated that a lot because too many authors try to suggest to-force a one-size-fits-all system, when clearly, in times like ours there is no one-size-fits-all solution to anything.

Sammons points to the essence and does NOT suggest that creating that profile is easy.
"... Building your personal influence on LinkedIn (and online in general) is a process. It doesn’t happen overnight—it accumulates over time..."

Again, this is a huge plus in my world. I am so sick and tired of books which suggest that anything is easy. Quite to the contrary, because, today the whole world is participating and competing, every career step and the presentation thereof need to be thought through carefully. This is where Sammons' book shines. Step by steps she walks the reader through the process.

Now, here is the flaw:

I do not agree with with the author about the topic of blogging at Linkedin. I post the same blogs on my own blog (with blogger) and on Linkedin. For every 50 hits on Linkedin I get 500 on Blogger.

Of course, my observations are merely the one of a blogger, who watches her own data. However, in light of Mr. Itai Leshem's revelations about blogging stats at Linkedin I must wonder why author Stephanie Simmons, who by her own account is a Linkedin expert, did not know this.

Beginner or Expert: Master LinkedIn from Where You Are

I work with small businesses that may not yet be ready to commit to blogging, and that also understand Facebook is a slippery slope. Therefore, we recommend LinkedIn to get started sharing great content and engaging with their audience online.

Of course, they have lots of questions and need guidance and encouragement for making the most of LinkedIn. Now they can get that and more from Linked to Influence.

Let’s face it, there is a lot going on with LinkedIn. That’s why I’m pleased to now have this resource to recommend to my clients. It has a logical beginning, middle and end, so if you follow and implement all of the steps, there will be no stone left unturned.

This book exceeded my expectations in every single way. I've been using LinkedIn for several years and always suspected that I wasn't using it effectively. I've read two other books that helped me improve but only incrementally. I have so much highlighting and flags sticking out on the pages that my copy looks like a bluebird rather than a book! I love that Stephanie included a link to a related workbook because that will help provide the reinforcement to implement many of her recommendations.

About the Author
Dana C. McWay is a lawyer and veteran health information management professional. A member the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Board of Directors, she served on several AHIMA committees, most recently the Professional Ethics Committee. She was also a member of the Missouri Health Information Management Association's Legislative Committee, and a voting member of the Institutional Review Board at Washington University Medical School. Previously a Director of Medical Records for a large teaching hospital and for-profit substance abuse facility, Ms. McWay led the charge to convert an outmoded, paper-based record management system to a modern electronic system. In addition to LEGAL AND ETHICAL ASPECTS OF HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT for which she received a Triumph Award from AHIMA, she has led several audio conferences, served as co-editor of online continuing education offerings, and written a second HIM text, TODAY'S HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT: AN INTEGRATED APPROACH. Licensed to practice law in Illinois and Missouri, Ms. McWay is currently the Clerk of Court for the US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri and one of three recipients of the Director's Award for Outstanding Leadership within the Federal Judiciary.

The print is way too small

While this book does a good job of covering all areas of Health Information Management, it is written in a way that is difficult to understand. It's the driest text I have ever read. The main problem I found, however, is that the print is very small. Even with my prescription glasses on, I have to bring in extra lights to be able to read the text. Why print the book this way, other than to cut costs? At over $100, I would hope to receive a book that is readable.

Very good textbook and easy to read through.The only thing that was a problem was the small font type used for the chapters. Sure hope the publisher revises the next edition with a bigger font. Other than that very good information and the power points were excellent. Hope other students also do well with this.

About the Author
Originally from Ireland, James is a writer who has spent time living in Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, and the United Kingdom. While living in Germany he broke nearly every single one of these rules, but writing a book about what not to do in Germany means he is able to put each cultural faux pas down to 'research'.��-�Niklas is originally from Germany and has lived in several countries including Sweden and China. After working for a number of international teams at several companies, he realised that his colleagues were both intrigued and humoured by some of the 'German' things he did. Seeing that there was an interest in German mannerisms, he started putting together notes for what would eventually become the published book.

Excellent, funny read with many uncommon insights

So funny and a great tool for Ausl�nder who want to get better acquainted with Germany... I'm an American expat living in Germany so I've read a lot of these kinds of books/essays/etc over the years and this is probably the best one yet. Many regurgitate the same old cliches about Germans being punctual and not crossing the street when the light is red, but German Men Sit Down to Pee has really unique insights--even the title is something that I used to laugh at an old boyfriend for but never realized it was a cultural phenomenon. It's well-written overall, a pleasant, easy read, and has lots of good-to-know anecdotes about bureaucracy, the "administrative police" that give tickets for civil offences, and other subjects that inevitably surprise people that move here from other countries. Great purchase/gift for any newbie to Germany, and also just a funny little guide for anyone who's interested in German culture. I'll be giving it to students and longer-term visitors for sure.

Laugh and Learn

This is a fun but genuinely helpful book that gives newcomers, expats, and visitors to Deutschland good, accurate information and insight about German customs--all while making you chuckle. A pretty fast read, I wish this had been around before I moved to Germany! I had worried that it would just be like reading a few blog posts or top tens on the Internet, but it wasn't. Although some of the information is familiar to me after over 3 years of living here as an expat, I still managed to learn something. The author provides historical and cultural references within his anecdotes, so while the book reads fast and primarily entertains, you *do* walk away feeling like you've learned something. That's important, and I think this book made the grade.

A nice, funny and useful piece of reading

If there’s one country that seems to be the favourite target of several stereotypes, it’s definitely Germany. While some of them are by all means exaggerated, several of them are, in fact, true, to my view at least!
And “German Man Sit Down to Pee...” is definitely quite a collection of them! I’ve experienced myself some of them in the 2 years since I've moved to Germany and I’ll just some up now my “top 10” insights which proved to be perfectly right!
1. Germans DO seem to have every insurance policy available out there
2. Work time is for work (and ALMOST nothing else)
3. You DO have to bring cake on your birthday/thesis presentation/first day in the office/last day in the office
4. Having a hobby is important (and has to be taken as seriously as possible)
5. Germans do “go Dutch when paying in a restaurant” (one of the best inventions ever, although I never heard of it being called “Dutch” before).
6. The sit down when you pee part: I had no clue of this particular one, but after asking around (oh, yes, I did that!!) it turned out to be generally true, at least in what concerns the situation at home.
7. Recycle: they day I moved in my first shared flat (with Germans) and found the different garbage containers: for paper, aluminium waste, biodegradable, plastic and glass (white, green and brown!!) came, in fact, with the great feeling of finally doing the right thing.
8. Cycling is very “in” around here!
9. Nazi jokes are to be avoided: sometimes, over a beer or two, this topic might have come up a few times, but, indeed it was NEVER a topic for jokes.
10. There is an “asparagus season”! At least in Bavaria!
While I’ve read many exaggeration on this topic, this book seems to be quite accurate. Surprisingly enough, however, most of the Germans I’ve met are not so keen on punctuality, quite a few of them have a thing for crossing the street on red light and most of the people I’ve come across are really (really) polite and nice in their speech even upon disapproval.
However, I really enjoyed the reading: funny, easy to follow, well researched! As a newcomer to Germany, it is interesting to compare the authors’ experiences, views and conclusions with my own! It is definitely a useful and pleasant read. I highly recommend it to anyone planning on coming/moving to Germany!

H.G. Wells is one of my favorite authors, and so it was with no small thrill that I discovered this relatively unknown work of his in my local library. At under 100 pages, it is a one-sitting story, and I plowed through it quickly.

Our first-person narrator is a croquet player, an Englishman raised by his wealthy aunt. While sitting on a terrace at a resort of sorts, he strikes up a conversation with a doctor. The doctor feels the need to get a weight off his chest, and our croquet player agrees to hear him out. Soon, the doctor works himself into a froth, worried about some Evil that lurks about the premises and beyond, something that others think even oozes up from the ground. The croquet player thinks over these things, then meets another doctor the next day. This doctor says the first man has been driven mad by the fears of modern man's violence and monstrous inclinations. But this doctor seems nearly as mad, his insanity wrapped in a sense of man's primitive past that has reared up through modern civilities and displayed its true colors.

Written between the two world wars, this novella is an attempt to study the dark side of human nature. Wells, devoted to evolutionary and Darwinistic theory, tries as he may to come up with an explanation for an evolving humanity that seems instead to be devolving on many levels. He makes a concerted attempt to debunk any religious types in his book (and in most of his books, for that matter), but he fails to come up with anything as frightening or believable as Robert Louis Stevenson's Jekyl and Hyde symbolism. Sadly, his scientific effort at a metaphysical question comes up flat. Nevetheless, I love his scientific honesty to face the question at all.

In the end, the croquet player is given a choice between being a quiet, apathetic victim to this evil, or being a vigilante who fights against it. The croquet player's final decision is a telling and ironic one.

They don't make 'em like this anymore

I give five stars to "The Croquet Player" by HG Wells not only because it is one of his better, more symbolically controlled works, but because of its overall modern styling & texture. In a mere novella, Wells is able to build up a powerful character analysis that still has far-reaching implications to Western Civilization. Of course, much of the finesse of the narrative is in its openness of interpretation. When I read this book, I think of Orson Welles directing the action in his high, sinister style. The narrative is framed by a man in his thirties whose life has been shaped by his single aunt's wealth. They are excellent croquet players, & live a life of ease. One day meets a man on a terrace, a man with an unusual story. From there it gets more & more intense--& then another man appears--& suddenly answers & questions become indistinguishable! The role of croquet is skillfully understated yet poignant, culminating in more than an evening's worth of introspection/discussion. One of the better writings of Wells', challenging any living writer to express timeless ideas so artistically & succinctly. Plus, for the time investment, this book gives a thousand times back in stimulation!
