Held Captive by These Characters

In this second installment of the Fire on Ice series Ryker and Kate dig just a little bit deeper into your heart. They were brought together in book one under unfortunate circumstances, made the best of it and are now ready for a full future together.

It seems as if Kate and Ryker can't catch a friggin break, reeling from tragedy, they are both plunged right back into it yet again. Luckily for them, they are pros at dealing with pain and tragedy and need to put all of their tools to work now. Kate and Ryker feel like they are a strong couple and are brought to the test time and time again in this book.

Ryker is on the road with his team leaving Kate alone quite a bit to deal with her feelings. She is a grief counselor, however sometimes telling somebody what to to and doing it yourself is a different story. Kate and Ryker start to drift apart, holding in feelings only to make it worse in the end. Things haven't changed on the road for Ryker either, he is still a hot hockey player at the top of his game. There is temptation all around and with trouble at home, sometimes a bad decision is easier to make.

There are tons of emotions at play again for this sweet couple (quickly becoming one of my favorites) as they work through tragedy and hope for triumph. We see Kate break out of her shell more this time around, doing things she wouldn't usually so and showing she is stronger than she was. Ryker is looking to show his wife how much he loves her, even when she is at her worst. While there are some low points for Ryker, he proves how much he loves Kate over and over, and treads into book boyfriend territory this time around. We get to see him as a loving husband, almost forgetting his puck bunny days of the past-almost.

Captive is well written and despite the emotional roller coaster we are on with Kate and Ryker, they still steam up the pages. Great addition to a great series and I am looking forward to the next one!

HOLY HOT HOCKEY HUNK!!!

OMG -- I cannot even begin to tell you how much I loved this book!!! If you haven't read Bound first, you need to. I was lucky to be a beta reader for this book. I was constantly telling Brenda to write faster so that I could read more. What an amazing story!!! She told me that she wanted to make the sex scenes even hotter than Bound. WELL SHE DID THAT AND THEN SOME!! Holy Crap!! This book is sooo hot and steamy!! There wasn't anything that I didn't love about it. Ryke may just be the perfect fan. He's patient, heart of gold, loves with his whole heart, doesn't cheat/falter, and treats Kate like a princess.....oh and did I mention that he's a HOT as HELL HOCKEY PLAYER?!?!? I wanna be Kate in my next life!!! Lucky girl!!!

This story has emotion (sobbed many times)and will pull at your heart strings! This also has some funny parts and like I mentioned.....many steamy parts!! I am so glad Brenda decided to make this a series!!! and I soooo cannot wait for Luke's story next!!! I love him!!!

Beautiful!

This sequel to Bound was truly the perfect book.

The continuation of Kate and Ryker's love affair was a beautifully written story. They are now married and face Ryke's time away from home for away games and Kate's daily struggles with her past tragedy.

This couple continue to face heartbreak but it is the deep love and commitment they have for each other that pulls them through. Their is a whole lot of angst in this book, but it was just enough to show how real this journey felt to me. Ryke and Kate deal with issues that many married couple have to face every single day. They fight, they ignore each other, they pull away. But every single time, their devotion sees them through.

I loved this book from beginning to end. The love story that is Kate and Ryker touched me in a way like no other. Their unconditional love and support of family and friends, including a little girl named Melody, stole my heart. The camaraderie between Ryke and his teammates made me both laugh and smile.

This is a special couple and a very special story. You will not be disappointed. Although I do recommend that you read book 1 first...Bound. And now I look forward to Book 3 which will spotlight their dear friend, flirt and fellow hockey player, Luke.

A huge 5 stars from me!!

More valuable for the translations than the IPA

This review can be applied to the complete catalog of Nico Castel's Opera Libretti. I happen to own most of them and have found them extremely useful as a teacher of voice and as a director of opera. The hard cover linen bindings are Smyth-Sewn, rather than glued, so you can expect a lifetime of use. They are printed on bright white paper which is easy to read. They reek of quality. Now to the content. For me, the word-for-word translations are invaluable. Mr. Castel has also provided idiomatic translations when the literal ones are a bit obtuse. This is very helpful. There are many voice teachers and singers out there that rely on IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) to teach/learn their texts. I must admit that I do not subscribe entirely to IPA as a sole source for pronunciation. In my opinion, while IPA does offer the student a groundwork for pronouncing the words, it does not offer the means to learn the correct inflection that must be mastered if one wishes to really become a master communicator in foreign languages. So, I believe it is advisable that a singer move beyond IPA and work with a coach that has expertise in the foreign languages. Many thanks to Nico Castel for the immense labor of love that these volumes must have cost him. They truly belong in every vocal pedagogue's library.

Monetary expression of labor value

This book is an excellent introduction to Marx's economic theories (but not his political theories). It has three main merits: (i) it is written in an extremely clear and understandable manner, (ii) it compresses most of Marx's economic ideas into a short book, and (iii) it introduces the notion of the monetary expression of labour value, which is a key concept to understanding Marx's labor theory of value. The recent renaissance on labor value theories is partly due to the author's efforts. If you think that labor value theories are nonsense, then read this -- it may change your mind. Similarly, if you are convinced of the foundational importance of labor time in understanding captialist economies (as opposed to, say, marginal utility) then you may still learn something new.
The mathematical content can be understood by anyone who can read an algebraic equation and follow some simple manipulations.
In sum, this is a book for those interested in Marx's economics, but may not want to wade through all three volumes of Capital.

Alright, fine, I didn't actually finish this book, but I read enough of it to constitute adding it to my shelf (although I should really just be trading it in to a used bookstore, goddamn this vanity of mine).

Reading Marx can be challenging, at first. Reading guides to Capital Volume I, and re-reading Volume I, were paramount to by comprehending it. Thus, I felt the desire to read Foley, before tackling Volume's II and III.

Poor Foley. He simply isn't good at elucidating the abstruse. This is the second book I've read by him. The former was a popularizing of main stream economic thought. It paled in comparison to 'The Worldly Philosophers' by Heilbroner. And this book too pails in comparison to David Harvey's companion to Capital. Although Harvey's book is a companion, it can be read in isolation.

Foley is attempting to explain all three volumes of Marx's Capital in 160 pages. The first 60 pages discuss Capital Volume I, and the remaining 100 pages, the other two volumes. In regards to the first 60 pages, again, one would be better off reading all 300 pages of Harvey, or even some of the other intro and beginners guides to Capital. Somehow Foley incorporates obscure algebra in places where it ought not to exist, and he has absolutely no flair, flash, or pizazz in his writing. The book is dryer than Arizona, and you'll be bored stiff by the end of chapter 1. Marx may be a difficult writer, and he may require multiple readings, and additional sources, but at least he added in a sense of humor, dynamic explanations, and literary gusto, to much of his works.

I'd say I won't read Foley ever again, but I couldn't anyway because these are the only two books I've ever seen by him.

Great Companion

While some may prefer the book "Companion to Capital" by Harvey, I believe that Duncan Foley has done a much better job with Marx. This is written for the economist who is looking back at "Capital Volume I" with a weary eye. Foley is purely scientific, and brings merit to Marx's argument. Duncan Foley makes Marx a relevant player in economics again. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Marxian Economy, or the history of economic thought.

A wonderful book that needed a much better ending.

Yonge does an exceptional job in this novel of developing her characters. It is this gift that maintains the reader's attention through what is a rather long novel about a large English family growing up in the countryside. Her insight into human nature and even human psychology for most of the novel as depicted in her characters is to be greatly admired.

The unfortunate part of this novel occurs within the last 1,000 pages or so. Up to this point, the novel is quite good. It had maintained a "realness" to it without overdoing the sentimental drama. All of this ends towards the end of the novel. The story of Alan Earnscliffe and Margaret May is over-the-top sentimental and sad. This would be forgiveable, if the main protaganist in the novel (Ethel) had her own happy ending. Spoiler alert: Unfortunately, Ethel continues to sacrifice everything for others knowing that she will end up lonely when they all move on with their lives. It goes beyond honest Christian charity and unselfishness into an unhealthy lack of boundaries on Ethel's part. She seems to fail at teaching some of her family members self-sufficiency. The very thing that the authoress critiques in Dr. May (Ethel's father) when his wife was alive, she unknowingly fosters by keeping him dependent on Ethel to run the household.

It is a travesty that Yonge chose to end her novel this way. The ending does not appear to be as measured and well-thought out as the rest of the novel. It is almost as if she was in a hurry to wrap things up (the ending is rather abrupt). The three stars I gave this novel were for her brilliant character development and beginning and middle sections of the novel. The ending I would give a negative rating if it existed. That is quite unfortunate.

An inspirational family

This novel tells the story of the May family where 11 children are left motherless when their father overturns the family's gig. The portraits of the different children and their reactions to their loss and their development and especially the growth of Ethel May are lovely. Read this and then read "The Trial", which is the sequel for a full dose of CMY's multi-character family saga.

Charlotte Yonge is a terrific author

Both of my high school daughters have read this now, and it ranks among their favorites. I wish the sequel was offered here.
