About the Author
Robert J. Michaels is a Professor of Economics at California State University, Fullerton, and Daniel Haan Research Fellow in Law and Economics. He is also an independent consultant to the electricity and natural gas industries. He holds an A.B. from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D from the University of California, Los Angeles, both in economics. His past positions include Staff Economist at the Institute for Defense Analyses and Senior Advisor to Hagler Bailly Consulting (now PA Consulting). He is an Adjunct Scholar at the Texas Public Policy Foundaton, the Cato Institute, the Institute for Energy Research and the National Center for Policy Analysis. His research on electricity and gas restructuring, measuring and constraining market power, vertical integration, and renewable energy requirements has appeared in industry and scholarly journals including Public Utilities Fortnightly, The Electricity Journal, Regulation, Antitrust Bulletin, Review of Industrial Organization, and Energy Law Journal. He is also Co-Editor of Contemporary Economic Policy, a peer-reviewed journal of the Western Economic Association. He has advised state commissions, electric utilities, power marketers, natural gas producers, pipelines, public interest groups, and governments on regulatory and antitrust matters. He has testified before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the California Public Utilities Commission, the Illinois Commerce Commission, and the U.S. House Subcommittee on Energy and Power.

this is a real review

I had the honor of taking the author for intermediate micro economics at csuf. I read every single word of this book. This professor uses examples that are intended to be different. These examples are somewhat extreme..which is exactly what illustrates each economic point. Choose this textbook. Real students will get connected in each example..and the other guy said it perfectly; The examples will be discussed at parties.

Don't buy the book. This is the worst book I ever read at the undergraduate level because the author made every easy concepts so hard to understand. If this book is required at your school, look at the topic and learn it at youtube would be 1000x more efficient. This book cost $170 when I first bought it. Amazing.

About the Author
Craig Alexander, known by his fans as "Crowie," has been named one of the greatest male triathletes of all time by Inside Triathlon magazine. He has found success at every level of the sport and ascended through the triathlon ranks to claim five Ironman and 70.3 world championships in the past five years. Craig's dedication to triathlon is surpassed only by his devotion to family--his wife, Nerida, and two young children, Lucy and Austin. Triathlon's first family hails from Sydney, Australia, but spends the race season in Boulder, Colorado. Paul K. Robbins shadowed Craig Alexander for over a year to capture the passion, craft, and challenges confronting the professional athlete. He has been behind the lens all his life and has worked commercially since 1985. As a former age-group triathlete, Paul knows firsthand where to look for the true beauty of the sport. Great photo portrait of Crowie

Is this a different kind of book? Of course it is, hence the lack of "biography" title in it. But that's what makes it special because it's an intimate photo essay into what it takes to be a world class Ironman athlete and a champion. Loved the photography, and loved the accompanying text. The quality of production and imagery also makes this book interesting beyond the world of triathlon. I was first interested in it as someone who loves triathlon - but I'm also happy to own it as someone who collect photography books as well.

Great Pics, decent dialogue- motivational book!

Excellent book that takes you inside the life of an Ironman World Champion. This is a coffee table book with hundreds of great pictures and some dialogue on each page. This is NOT an in depth narrative that goes deep... as advertised, this is a great coffee table book for the aspiring Ironman / Triathlete!

Disappointed, not what I was expecting...

I was very disappointed with this book. I'm a big fan of Ironman and Craig Alexander, but this book was a bit of a let down. This book is a coffee table book. It is filled mostly with photographs of Crowie with one or two line captions. I'm a fan, but I don't idolize him enough to have a picture book of him on my coffee table, and there is no reason to keep the book on the shelf because there isn't enough content to read. Awesome Panther Shifter

I fell in love with this story. I can't wait to see how it ends. Ms. Wolf is a terrific author who keeps you interested from front to back of the novel. It's a great read and one I think you would enjoy...besides I'm kinda biased...I'm a kitty lover! Panthers are one of my favorite big cats.

Excellent trilogy! :)

Read as part of the anthology Purrfect Mates: BBW Billionaire Panther Shifter Boxed Set of which I received an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review.

This was the book in the series that first had me laughing out loud. We see some more of Tom as Pharaoh and his panther as well. In this book both parties discover some very interesting (and important) secrets about the other. I enjoyed watching them really starting to fall in love in this book. Their romance thus far is a rocky one though. The last scene of this book really took me by surprise (and also had a giant cliffhanger).

About the Author

Hugo Fastl is Professor of Technical Acoustics in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Technical University M�nchen, Germany. He graduated 1969 in Music from the Academy of Music M�nchen, and 1970, 1974, and 1981 he earned at the Technical University M�nchen the degrees of Dipl.-Ing., Dr.-Ing., and Dr.-Ing. habil., respectively. His research interests are basic psychoacoustics and its applications in fields like audio-communication, noise control, sound quality design, audiology, or music. In 1987 he was elected Guest Professor of Osaka University, Japan, and in 1990 he became a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. He is head of the committee "Auditory Acoustics" of the Society for Information Technology (ITG), and with the German Acoustical Society (DEGA) he is member of the Board of Directors, and Treasurer. In 1983 he won the Award of the Society for Information Technology (ITG), in 1991 the Research Award in Audiology of the Forschungsgemeinschaft Deutscher H�rger�te-Akustiker, in 1998 the Research Award of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and in 2003 the Rayleigh Medal of the Institute of Acoustics (UK).

Eberhard Zwicker was one of the worlds top authorities in psychoacoustics. In his labs in Stuttgart and M�nchen he educated scientists and engineers who hold now key positions in basics and applications of (psycho-)acoustics. From his many honors, the Silver Medal of the Acoustical Society of America and the degree of Honorary Member of the Audio Engineering Society are among the more outstanding.

Very informaive...reads like a research paper

The book was written by "the source" for Psychoacoustics and was, as such, incredibly informative and detailed in the information provided. With that said, it read like a series of research papers (which, for all intents and purposes, is what it is) without drawing significant conclusions. The data is provided, with small inferences made about conclusions within each section. The book is provided at the graduate level of previous knowledge about physics and the functioning of inner ear. If you're looking for detailed data on Psychoacoustics, this is a tremendous book. If you're looking for an undergraduate "textbook" on psychoacoustics and what that means regarding the understanding of hearing and the microstructural anatomy of the inner ear...you may be better off with one of the other textbooks.

instructive audio tracks from the CD

The author made a good and indeed essential decision to include a CD of audio with the book. Inherent in the topic is a need to appreciate what the written text is about. The copious audio snippets greatly enhance the reader's appreciation of the subject.

The instructional level is suitable for an undergraduate or grad student. Minimal background in biology or acoustics is warranted.

The book also has some fascinating tidbits. Like the fact that a narrowband sound, centered around 8 kHz and emanating from a speaker positioned above the subject's head will cause her to perceive it as coming from in front of her ??! Wow. This surely must be an unintended artifact of evolution and the hardcoded hearing system.

Great book for scientists and engineers

The third edition of this book is improved over the previous. I liked the fact that now you can listen to audio examples within the extra material that is provided for download from Springer. The CD-ROM actually is NOT included with the book, so do not make mistake to ask for replacement since you will not get the CD-ROM. You need to visit Springer web site that is printed on the front cover to download the CD-ROM material... You can then cut a CD if you wish.

Otherwise, this is one of the best books written on the general topic of psychoacoustics. Some parts may require good knowledge of Calculus and graduate level Physics for full understanding and to make use of the concepts in practice.

Esoteric and absolutely brilliant

Astounding scholarship. I am a non-academic with broad interests in art history, history, and art connoisseurship, and am fairly widely read in the history of the Rennaissance. The chapter on Botticelli's Primavera is one of the greatest pieces of art history criticism I have ever come across. For anyone who is interested in the meanings of paintings and their iconography, this book is a must. Also, I would recommend Jean Seznec's 'The Survival of the Pagan Gods" as a companion piece. As an aside, these works, especially the Wind, give further credence to Johan Huizenga's theories elaborated in "The Waning/Autumn of the Middle Ages".

Wind's book is a hard slog and there are times when reading it requires No-Doz; however, his analysis of Botticelli's Primavera is fascinating.

About the Author
Jonathan Janz grew up between a dark forest and a graveyard. In a way, that explains everything. So far, he has written two novellas (Old Order and Witching Hour Theatre), several short stories, and two novels. His primary interests are his wonderful wife and his three amazing children, and though he realizes that every author’s wife and children are wonderful and amazing, in this case the clich� happens to be true.

Lots of potential, but too many problems

First of all, the idea of this story is great. It's utterly terrifying. I wanted to like it, and on some level I guess I did, because I finished it, but there were too many strange inconsistencies for it to really feel like a satisfying read. Too many things that pulled me out of the story. Frankly, I can't believe an editor didn't catch some of these issues. This isn't some two-bit publishing house we're talking about here. This is Samhain, and I expected better.

What am I talking about? I'll give some examples (moderate spoilers, but this is all from the first half of the book).

The first morning in their new house, Chris wakes up incredibly early (4:30 am) and goes into town to explore. Just before 7:00, he goes into the grocery store. Now, this is built up to be a tiny town. At one point Chris comments that he hasn't even seen a motel in the town. But they do apparently have a grocery store that's open before 7. I suppose that's possible. Before Chris finishes checking out, he hears a commotion in the parking lot. He runs for the door. Outside, he finds the dog he just picked up on the road (who was waiting in the car) barking at a man standing outside the car. He lets the dog out. He talks to the man. There is no mention of bags of groceries. He has apparently left them in the store. Then he gets in his car and leaves -- without groceries. Yet when he gets home, his wife watches him take bags out of the car and carry them into the house. His hands are so full of groceries that magically appeared in his trunk, she has to open the door for him.

A bit later in the book, Ellie wakes up and freaks out because something is licking her hand. She assumes it's the dog. Of course, rather than looking down to see the dog, she just sits up in bed and screams toward the door for the dog to leave. She actually says to this stray dog who they've only had for a day or two, "I want you to leave this room at once." (I've had my dog for 11 years, and he doesn't respond to sentences like that.) She is surprised to note that she can't hear the dog breathing and can't hear his claws on the hardwood floor, yet she's still positive he's there. Of course, she doesn't LOOK for the dog, which I find very unrealistic. Even if the room is dark, your instinct would be to LOOK. But not here. Instead, she continues to scream at the (non-existent) dog and then at her husband for letting the (non-existent) dog into their room. The horror here -- the fact that she feels something nuzzling her hand -- is one thing, but the characters need to respond in a way that's realistic in order for the moment to have the most impact.

At another point, Ellie wrecks the car. Now, when this happens, I assume it's dark (although a time isn't given) because she talks about only seeing the dog in the road because of her headlights reflecting off of its eyes. After wrecking the car down the road from her house, she walks home. She then has a long conversation with her husband. He has to walk back out to the road (because of course their house is very isolated) and get the car and drive it back, then pick her up and drive her into town to the hospital. She has an emergency room visit (and anybody who's done that knows that it's never fast), and then drives her home. They get home at 8:30 pm. So, assuming that all of that (from the time she wrecked the car to when they get home) would have taken AT LEAST an hour (probably closer to three), and given that the story takes place in late April and early May, how could it have been dark when she wrecked the car?

But wait. It gets better.

After putting her to bed, her husband walks into the woods. He comments that he gets to the clearing just before 11:00, and that it took him just over an hour to get there. Fine. He even thinks about how it will also take him just over an hour to get back home. He then goes further up the trail (further away from home) to a second clearing, where everything fades to black, but there's reason to believe that naughtiness ensues.

Meanwhile, back at the house, his wife wakes up. She looks at the clock and sees that she has been asleep for LESS THAN ONE HOUR. She then hears a noise downstairs. She goes into the basement. She's never been down there, which makes ZERO sense, because they've been living here a while now. Who would move into a house and not check out every inch? Anyway, in the basement, she sees something scary and runs outside. She gets in the car. And suddenly, her husband is back.

Now, based on what the narrator said, a round trip would have taken Chris 2.5-3 hours, and that's assuming he didn't stop to have sex in the clearing (which he did). And yet for his wife, it's been less than an hour.

Huh??

Now, I know it seems like I'm nit-picking. Maybe I am. But these kinds of inconsistencies pull me out of a story. I went back and read that stupid grocery scene three times, trying to figure out if I'd missed something. These types of things are indicative (in my mind) of characters being pushed around like chess pieces in order to serve the plot, without regard for actual human behavior, and they're the kind of thing that should be caught by editors (if not by the author).

The examples given were all in the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the book, but the issues like this go on and on.

I might have rated higher for the story itself -- which was damn scary! -- if it weren't for the ending. Without giving too much away, let me just say, it makes no sense. There's this whole thing with razor blades and a lighter, and it's preposterous to think that these hordes of baddies wouldn't just jump her and take the lighter away. After all, she's completely alone AND has a broken wrist, and there are more than a dozen of them, and it's already been demonstrated that using the lighter on the razor blade isn't instantly fatal.

Oh. And there's the thing with the video tapes -- in and of itself a fairly contrived plot device -- the whole point of which seems to be to prove that a certain character was in love with Chris. But after finishing the book and looking back on that section, it simply made no sense. It was basically the red herring of the story, but in hindsight, WHY would it have been that way? (I know I'm being vague, but I'm trying not to totally spoil the ending.)

And then, after all that, the story ends with a bit of a cliff-hanger which in this case felt more like a cop-out than a literary device.

Honestly, I think this could have been a great book, but to me, it felt more like a first draft than a polished novel.

Great Book!

He's the author who can always make the improbable so scary you'll feel compelled to check the locks on the front door. This chilling novel will haunt you, and make your blood run cold and your heart race with fear.

Jonathan Janz vividly describes and perpetuates. Reading this book is like slipping into the Overlook yourself, as Janz tells the characters' stories through his superb writing and vivid imagination. The pages seem to fly by your eyes without a whim, your brain just sucking up the story like a vacuum, and once you reach the "explosive" end, you may be wishing for more.

Jonathan Janz is a master storyteller.
