Painting Their Portraits in Winter is by the exhilarating new Chicana literary sensation Myrium Gurba. Think--twisted MexiPunk with abuelitas and la Muerte in her finest and cruelest S/M gear. Think young queer Chicana inspirations of Junot Diaz, Gayle Jones, Cisneros. The writing is impeccable. The rhythm of the language is so intoxicating, smooth as baby's flesh, and then with a turn of a screw it goes to the dark fertile places where horror, fantasy and possibilities roam. Not for the faint or sheltered, this is about fierce, bloody beauty in the splendor, squalor and suburban wasteland of Mexico and her scattered diasporic locations. The kind of book to read, teach, share and savor.

Dark, Scary, Fantastic

The stories in this book are beautiful and shocking. The characters can go, sometimes on the same page, from falling in love to recoiling in horror, or running from a gang shootout. It's about a young girl growing up, discovering the world she's always lived in and seeing it in a new light -- sometimes with big events (like the aforementioned shootout, or her first sexual experience), but more often with small moments that illuminate all the big things. There was a sentence in the first story (go on and read it, it's probably in the preview) that made me physically throw down the book and scream out.

Mexico is a crazy place, and the world of this book catches it at its darkest and most electric.

About the Author
Reece has an A.B. in Biology from Harvard University, an M.S. in Microbiology from Rutgers University, and a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley. She taught biology at Middlesex County College and Queensborough Community College.

Michael L. Cain taught introductory biology and a broad range of other biology courses at New Mexico State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for thirteen years. He is now writing full time and is affiliated with Bowdoin College in Maine. Dr. Cain has published dozens of scientific articles on topics such as genetic variation in plants, insect foraging behavior, long-distance seed dispersal, and factors that promote speciation in crickets. Dr. Cain is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, and awards, including the Pew Charitable Trust Teacher-Scholar Fellowship and research grants from the National Science Foundation.

Robert Jackson is a retired member of the faculty of the Information Systems Department at Brigham Young University. He has researched, published, and taught in the areas of object-oriented systems development, e-commerce, Web systems, project management, and information systems education. Bringing a wealth of real-world business experience and technical expertise to this book, Dr. Jackson is currently self-employed as a principal in several new e-commerce ventures, where he practices firsthand the analysis, design, and business principles presented in the Seventh Edition. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.

Campbell Biology

I'm a middle-aged computational linguist, and I bought this book after a fascinating conversation with my doctor about the advances made in biology in recent years due primarily to cancer and AIDS research. I want to learn important things that mankind has understood before I have to leave the planet. I thought I was going to have to pull myself together to read this heavy stuff, but not at all. For me, this is a page turner. I couldn't wait for my commute so I could sit in a corner and read my book. I have to say I am left totally BLOWN AWAY by what we have come to understand about biology -- both the details as well as the bigger picture

Had I been younger when I picked it up, I would not have appreciated as much the skill with which the authors present the material. The order and manner in which concepts are introduced have obviously been honed over decades of experience -- first the major themes which tie the field together, a complete and painless high school chemistry course placed so you sense why you're going to need it, the critical role that water plays in making life possible. An overarching description of what energy is and how it functions precedes an attempt to discuss cellular respiration and photosynthesis, so that you're primed not to lose the forest for the trees. You really feel like you sense how it works, and if you're paying attention at all, you can't help but come away with admiration for the community of scientists who made it happen. I feel better about the human race, and am left sensing the magnificence of this achievement in the greater scheme of things. The whole of biology is presented pretty comprehensively. I left the book feeling that I got what I came for.

But oddly the biggest thing I take away from this book is a deep impression of the astounding machine that I have been given to use in this life. You can't help waking up each morning hoping to be worthy of it.

Same as Campbell w/o Masteringbiology

This textbook is the same book as the *more expensive* Campbell Biology, also being sold on amazon... The difference is that you also get access to Masteringbiology, which is about 50 bucks on their website. This is obviously the better deal. Anyway, the book arrived brand new and vacuum-sealed with plastic (2 Layers!). Perfect condition. Aside from that, the book is very nice. There are many pictures and diagrams and the text is easy to read, unlike some other textbooks I am required to read... I have already outlined the first few chapters and I am very happy with the purchase, because it is a good textbook, it is much cheaper than my college bookstore, and it included Masteringbiology in the price.

Edit: Just wanted to add that on the Masteringbiology website, you also get access to the Campbell Biology E-book (normally $100 on their website with the mastering), so you don't have to carry the book with you to school for access. I just have to stress how great this E-book is, really. I normally don't love reading books on my iPad with the kindle app; it just doesn't feel the same. But I read this textbook my iPad using the Pearson app and it is fantastic. It looks exactly like the book and you have the option of leaving sticky notes and highlighting things for later. Oh and reading the book is generally online, but you can choose the chapters you want to download for reading offline. I hardly even use the printed textbook these days.

Basic Bible for Biologist

This edition is more detailed than 9th edition. I love the stuff that they added and revised, such as better pictures and improved examples. The 7th and 9th edition are adequate enough to learn basic biology, but keeping updated with new editions is wise.

Firstly, there are pros and cons for the hardcover and three-ring binder options...

Hardcover: Pro: the whole thing is in one whole piece. Con: the hard cover option is REALLY HEAVY to carry around!

Three-ring binder option: Pro: student can customize how they can segment the chapters by putting the pages in a three-ring binder, so they are not carrying around to much weight of the other chapters. Con: the pages are flimsy and can be torn out of the three-ring binder, if you do not handle the pages with care. also, you have to buy your own three-ring binders to put the pages in before you open the plastic, which is securing your new book.

So, if you are a guy like me, who can carry extra weight and likes all the pages secured together, you should buy the hardcover. If you are going to buy the hardcover, you will be reading it in front of a desk.
However, if you are someone who cant hold up heavy books while reading on the couch (or non-desk), you should buy the three-ring binder option.

Overview of 3D technology in 2010 - status and trends

"3D Video Technologies: An Overview of Research Trends" is very well named. Written in 2010 and released early in 2011, this book summarizes the current status of 3D technology, including stereoscopic video, holograms, volumetric 3D video, no-glasses stereoscopic video and no-glasses multiview video. This is a much wider scope than just the 3DTV you see in movie theaters today, however most of those other technologies are not available to the average consumer. The book identfies the key research organizations and examines all components of the deployment chain: 3D cameras, 2D to 3D conversion, how to represent 3D in a file, encoding, trasnmission, transmission errors, and displays. Each of these topics is covered lightly -- this isn't the book to go to for details -- but there are also a lot of references that could be pursued. The author also summarizes research currently underway and likley future research trends. I found this book easy to understand and a relatively quick read, both of which are positive attributes when trying to understand a very large and complex body of research.

The author's bias is that 3D is wonderful and will take over our video watching media in the near future, and that the internet will replace over-the-air broadcast, satelite, cable and the like. The book barely touches on physiological problems resulting from watching 3DTV, and does not opine on whether or not consumers want 3D. I am more of a sceptic myself, and I would have appreciated a bit more explorations into the negative aspects of 3DTV.

This book provides an excellent introduction to 3D Video. It gave me a large picture, including ambiguities surrounding the current status that are not otherwise obvious. If you enjoy this book, you might also appreciate, 3D Television (3DTV) Technology, Systems, and Deployment: Rolling Out the Infrastructure for Next-Generation Entertainment, which takes a more detailed and technical approach but is more difficult to read.

In a work that neatly marries the subjects of his previous books, Ferguson, who made his name with controversial popular histories of World War I (Pity of War, 1999) and the Rothschild banking empire (House of Rothschild, 1998), continues to challenge conventional wisdom. Here, he argues that the enormous expense of war, which forces governments into fiscal innovation, is the primary agent of financial change and its political repercussions, which sometimes include starting new wars. In Ferguson's view, political crises defined broadly to include those spurred by religion, law and culture cause both wars and financial disasters; the ensuing political outcomes determine the long-term economic fallout. Economic events, on the other hand, affect politics in indirect and unpredictable ways. Emphasizing the nuances and exceptions to his argument, he marshals economic statistics to support it, though he does not discuss alternative explanations for financial change. Despite frequent, jarring digressions into the minutiae of 1980s British politics and in praise of Thatcherism, the book is lucidly argued. But for a history that focuses so much on war, it includes little discussion of the military. Most controversially, Ferguson challenges the orthodox assumption that the world is headed toward a peaceful, prosperous and democratic global future. Economic success does not always lead to stability, he argues, and economic freedom is neither necessary for economic growth nor sufficient for political freedom. Nor, he warns, will economic globalization necessarily lead to greater economic or political cooperation. (Mar.) Forecast: This book will be more talked about than read, though it will attract serious readers. Like Ferguson's The Pity of War, its merits should outlive the controversy over its predictions.

As he thoroughly analyzes the nexus between economics and politics, he delves deep into the complex relationship among economic principles and international war, political changes in major countries, social liberalization, and national demographics. He challenges the prevailing principles of well-known author Paul Kennedy (The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers), specifically that economic change is the prime mover of political change, contending rather that the conflicting impulses of sex, violence, and power are together more powerful than money. In the book's many dense chapters, Ferguson argues that political institutions have often dominated economic development, and he deftly integrates historical trends and eras, multiple economic principles and theory, as well as modern economic growth and development. Challenging but very worthwhile.

i have read a number of Niall Ferguson books and appreciate his books very much. He is an excellent writer and able to synthesize a information from economics, history, politics and philosophy.

This book,unlike some of his other books, is a serious attempt at economic history. By definition, then, most lay-readers without an economic background may be rightly intimidated by this work. As most serious economic texts are the book is dense and can be tough reading. This is not because Ferguson is a bad writer, but because the dismal science is a tough subject.

This book is essentially about how in terms of economics, wars and military conflicts have driven the world. Ferguson takes the years 1700-2000 and keeping in mind this book was first published in 2001 this makes eminent sense.

The book is supported by many facts and figures and may graphs. As far as books about economics og, I learned quite a bit and enjoyed the book. In its 450+ pages, this is a survey of many events in history, as well as economics, and it was always interesting. As I said, not a easy beach read, but if you want to read something challenging from which you will learn, this is a good place to start.

If you have little interest in economics or no background, I would recommend other Ferguson books, or Sowell's Basic Economics as a start.

However, this is a really good book and deserves to be read, irrespective if you agree or disagree with his thesis.

Kindle Formatting Poor

THIS IS A RATING ONLY OF THE KINDLE FORMATTING, NOT THE BOOK ITSELF. Until Amazon allows for a review specifically of the Kindle formatting or another score within a review, I am forced to score the book poorly. Though this isn't the worst book for formating I've read on the Kindle, it is the worst one I've paid for. I expect a difficult or unpleasant reading experience out of free e-books, but for one I pay more than $0.99 for I expect MORE. None of the end notes are hyperlinked forcing the interested reader to have to guess-navigate to and from the end notes. Worst of all, though, occurs in Chapter 12 where a sentence abruptly ends into a numbered list. "What, that train of thought doesn't make any sense. Oh well, maybe I just don't understand. Just carry-on.... wait, I've read this before." That's right. Someone must have accidentally COPIED-AND-PASTED select paragraphs inadvertently on two different occasions in the same chapter. Talk about losing the point AND the reader. Did this happen earlier when I was confused and just didn't know it. Don't waste your money on the overly priced Kindle Format until the publisher guarantees the format.

This book is a fascinating read for everyone who is interested in the application of economic theory to world history. Reviewing and rejecting economic determinist theories like marxism, the political business cycle and imperial overstretch, Ferguson advances his own argument. It is war that brought us modern finance, bureaucracy and democracy. The outcome of war cannot be predicted with accuracy, but the nation that can finance it at least costs has a comparative advantage. Ferguson skillfully applies modern expectations theory to his historical account. He argues that military hegemony can spread good institutions around the globe as happened under British rule. You can disagree with his plea for benevolent imperialism in an age in which nations want to determine their own future. Moreover, it is questionable whether war `pays', since the costs of war exceeded revenues in most cases as Ferguson points out. But, this did not stop nations and groups from waging war.

Fantastic

"Marvel Illustrated - The Iliad" is probably the best of the Marvel Illustrated series. It follows Homer's The Iliad, detailing the siege of Troy. From what I remember of the epic poem, this graphic novel follows the story through quite accurately. Roy Thomas also chose full inclusion of the gods in the story, as he felt they formed the logic behind certain characters' decisions.

Miguel Sepulveda and Nathan Fairbairn do a great job of bringing the story to life, from glistening armor to a river running red with blood. Though the book is based around an epic battle, the images within aren't exactly visceral -- they were handled rather tastefully, and I feel that this is precisely how it should have been handled.

The book does have a few quirky, off-beat moments. Some characters speak aloud their actions, and others have battle cries that aren't exactly frightening ("I will slay you, if I can!"). These do not take away from the overall experience.

It is also worth noting that The Iliad is a very text-heavy graphic novel, and spares no one from complex Greek-era names. At two-hundred pages, this might seem a big slight considering the source material, but this is far from a quick read. This is definitely a book to dive into when time is not a constraint, especially since there is so much substance to sink one's teeth into.

A Full Taste of Homer's Poetic Magic

With words by the incomparable Roy Thomas and artwork by Miguel Angel Sepulvedra, Marvel Illustrated has brought to life the full complexity of Homer's Iliad. The Marvel Illustrated version is uncompromising, ranging from Olympus' heights to the sea's depths as it follows the fortunes of the Greeks and the Trojans "far on the ringing plains of windy Troy."

Marvel gives us no dummied-down version of The Iliad as recent movies and mini-series have given us. Rather, writer and artist deal with the full pantheon of gods and a cast of thousands of warriors in the brooding, bloody, and ultimately tragic tale that flows from King Agamemnon's deadly insult to the Greek hero Achilles. Roy Thomas, with rich, antique prose rivaled in Marvel lore only by the sumptuous language of the early Doctor Strange, gives us a full taste of Homer's poetic magic. Miguel Angel Sepulvedra exhausts the possibilities of comic-book art in making each warrior and god individual while he gorgeously pencils scenes ranging from tender romance to gore-drenched fields of war. Together, writer and artist have produced a tale that moves relentlessly from first argument to last battle.

Keep in mind that Marvel Illustrated The Iliad isn't for the casual comic-book reader. The complexity of the tale that it brings to life may overwhelm some, despite a thoughtfully included glossary and the care taken to distinguish the characters. I at first thought it over the top for the colorist to color-code the gods in their earthly appearances, but after a while I began to appreciate his help in keeping action and actors straight.

Keep in mind, too, that, with the exception of a brief introduction of Helen of Troy, her marriage to the Greek hero Menelaus, and her abduction by the Trojan prince Paris, Marvel Illustrated follows Homer's epic exactly. Don't be disappointed by not seeing the Trojan horse, as Homer didn't write of it in The Iliad. In the graphic novel's relentless tale of war, though, you likely won't miss the horse.

If I have one complaint about Marvel Illustrated The Iliad, it's the complaint that Roy Thomas makes in his introduction: that he had just 176 pages to tell the tale. Still, he has come as close as humanly possible to retelling The Iliad for our time in this limited space.

With The Iliad, Marvel Illustrated has revived the venerable tradition of Classics Illustrated and brought it up to date with production values of which the old artists and writers could only have dreamed. Marvel Illustrated is now putting out Homer's Odyssey, which, like The Iliad, will be an instant classic among graphic novels.

Good illustrated re-telling of Homer's classic tale

A very thorough re-telling of Homer's classic tale of the Trojan War. They're all here -- Hector, Achilles, Agamemnon, Odysseus, Helen. Lots of action and the artwork is excellent. It's a very faithful re-telling of the classic story.

However, a large part of the potential audience for graphic novels based on literature or non-fiction topics is likely to find this book to be "too much." These graphic novels have become very popular in recent years as a way to introduce reading to reluctant readers, below-grade-level readers, and English language learners. The thought is that they might take on an attractive, heavily illustrated story where they might be reluctant to take on a "real" book. And the theory has worked. A lot of these graphic novels have action stories, war stories, and other "male" topics because they represent a large segment of reluctant readers.

Anyway, while it's a great adventure yarn, this is not a boiled-down, adapted version of the story. It's over 100 pages long and the language is not simplified. It would undoubtedly appeal to high school students reading at grade level or college students, and for these readers the illustrations are a real plus. But teachers thinking about using this for ESOL classes and reluctant readers might find the language too complex.
