I would put most low reviews of this work down to politics

This is an excellent intermediate Macro textbook, and the writing style is more acessible than one usually encounters at this level of economics.
The theory is up-to-date and couched in less political dogma than similar products from other sources.
This is not an introduction to Macro!
This is a first-term MBA or intermediate BA/BS course!
Given the lower quality of the competing texts I have read, I put down most low reviews to sight-unseen grousing by partisans who wish to inflict monetary loss on Professor DeLong for his political views.
In todays political climate this is unsurprising, but it is quite disturbing that it has reached this far into solid science.

Without doubt one of the best on the market

I don't normally bother to review books, but the comments on this book are so bizarre I feel the need to respond. This is a textbook for the intermediate macroeconomics level. Someone coming to this book with no economics background at all might find the book hard going in places, but that is to be expected; it is not intended as a piece of popular writing on economics.
I am very familiar with intermediate macroeconomic textbooks -- indeed, I wrote ancillary material for one of the leading textbooks currently on the market -- and I think DeLong's textbook is one of the best books around. For many topics it is *the* best book.

Modern Macroeconomics

I took Professor Olney's Intermediate Macro class in Berkeley. We used the 1/e of the textbook along with her study guide. Despite the fact that the first edition was filled with typos and mathematical errors (which have been fixed in the 2/e), the intuition, the explanations, and the graphs were clear.

But what truly separates this textbook from every other intermediate macro textbook is the MPRF-PC model that replaces the AD-AS model that you find in most textbooks.

There are several major flaws in the AD-AS model. First, it uses the price level as the adjustment mechanism to equilibrium output. Second, the AD curve assumes a money supply target.

In the United States and in industrialized world, the key variable to emphasize is the inflation rate and NOT the price level. In addition, the Fed uses an interest rate target and NOT a money supply target.

Delong and Olney's book eliminates the silly assumptions that made sense to use 20 years ago, and uses more realistic assumptions to model a complex economy like the United States. There is no other intermediate macro textbook in the market that teaches the Monetary Policy Reaction Function and Phillips Curve model as clearly as Delong and Olney. Period.

Very good pastry oriented book

This book has more chapters on the pastry side of things than baking breads and yeast products. My favorite chapters covered cakes, tortes, sauces, plating, frozen desserts, and chocolate work. It has more pictures of finished desserts and plating ideas than other baking textbooks I have bought.

THIS BOOK SMELLS LIKE CINNAMON

We use this book in my baking program, and it's awesome. Not only does it have charts for troubleshooting (Wondering why your cookies spread so much, or why your cake is domed? This book will tell you!) but it also has hundreds of recipes, explains what certain ingredients do, talks of the history of pretty much any category of baked good you can think of, and best of all: it includes a ribbon-like bookmark that is attached via the spine, PLUS it's scented to smell like apples and cinnamon!

A fantastic reference and a "Must Have" if you love to bake...

This is a big pastry arts cookbook with literally hundreds of recipes covering everything you could possibly imagine to bake! There are so many really cool things about this book and it has become my "go-to" book for everything baking. The recipes are easy to understand and follow and there is a bit of the science of baking explained that is tucked away in there, too... It may be a textbook, but you don't have to be a student or pastry chef to benefit from its contents. Even beginners can use this book easily! And because it's a textbook for pastry arts students, the procedures, tips and tricks are spelled out right there, allowing for amazingly decadent desserts to be made that look hard to master, but that have recipes that are actually very easy to follow.

There's a big section of "bakeshop ingredients" that I have referred to quite a few times that includes descriptions and pictures of fruits, spices, and more. It's been a really handy source of information to have that I haven't found in any other cookbook.

Each recipe has nutritional information included (which is incredibly useful!) and often recipes have flavor variation suggestions.

If I had to describe this baking book in one word, I think I would say "complete". It's really all you need in the kitchen!

Guide to the factors that shape organizational design

Jay R. Galbraith is an internationally recognized expert on organization design. He is a Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California and Professor Emeritus at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland. This book is a updated/revised edition of 'Designing Organizations' which was originally published in 1995. It is split up into 10 chapters.
Chapter 1 - Introduction - really sets the stage for the rest of the book. It discusses the six main organization shapers: the increase buyer power; increase in the number of products and services; the Internet; multiple dimensions (functions, products, and geography, but also customer segments, solutions or offerings, and channels and processes); the requirement for a capacity to change; and speed (in bringing products and services to the market).
The following two chapters discuss how companies have to shape their organizational design, strategy, and structure in order how to deal with these organization shapers. Galbraith introduces his copyrighted Star Model (Strategy, structure, people, rewards, and processes), which looks AND sounds very similar to McKinsey's 7-S framework. Chapters 4 and 5 build on these chapter and discuss how organizations have to link their processes to coordination needs and integrate group processes. Then, in Chapter 6 discusses the easily changeable or reconfigurable organization based on the Star Model, which, according to Galbraith, results from the skilled use of three capabilities: (1) forming teams and networks across organizational departments; (2) the use of internal prices, markets, and marketlike devices to coordinate the complexity of multiple teams; and (3) the forming of partnerships to secure capabilities that it does not have. Each of these capabilities are discussed in detail.
The Chapters 7 to 10 are all very current and fashionable. They discuss the organizing around the customer, customer-focused structures, the design of the virtual corporation, and organizing the continuous design process. Although the subjects discussed are important, some of the examples are too long and take up most of the chapters. Some of the examples also do not really apply to every company/organization but are too specific. Still, these are issues that should not be forgotten about, especially organizing around the customer remains important.
I must admit that I am somewhat disappointed with this book, which is written by a leading authority in the field of organizational design. I believe it is especially the title that lets the book down. It is not so much a guide into strategies and structures; it more discusses the organization shapers and the possibilities that companies/organizations have to tackle the organization shapers. I believe that the book is especially weak in discussing organizational design and structures. Galbraith discusses his own Star-model (which reminds me of McKinsey's 7-S framework) and his reconfigurable organization (the learning organization?), but leaves all other models/designs/structures untouched. I have not been generous, the book really deserves a 3.5-star rating. The author uses simple business US-English.
