About the Author
Marcella Kelly teaches the Introduction to Business course at Santa Monica College. In addition to her well-recognized expertise in the areas of marketing and management, Ms. Kelly has extensive industry experience in today's business environment. Ms. Kelly earned her master's degree from UCLA and balances her firsthand business experience with strong teaching credentials built through years of experience in the classroom.

Dr. Chuck Williams is a Professor of Management in the Andre B. Lacy School of Business, formerly known as the College of Business, at Butler University. Dr. Williams previously served as Dean of the College of Business at Butler University, Dean of Eberhardt School of Business at the University of the Pacific, and Associate Professor of Management at the M.J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University. Dr. Williams has also served as Associate Dean and Chair of Management and has taught at Michigan State University and Oklahoma State University. Dr. Williams received his BA in psychology from Valparaiso University. He specialized in organizational behavior, human resources, and strategic management while earning his MBA and PhD in business administration from Michigan State University. His research interests include employee recruitment and turnover, performance appraisal, and employee training and goal setting. Dr. Williams has published research in the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Academy of Management, Human Resource Management Review, Personnel Psychology, and the Organizational Research Methods Journal. He was a member of the Journal of Management's editorial board and currently serves as a reviewer for numerous other academic journals. He was also webmaster for the Research Methods Division of the Academy of Management.

Wish I could give it no stars! Do not rent this book via an E version. You will not recieve the digital or printed access code. Nor can you buy a supplement. When amazon says it may on may not come with the access, it does not. Spent $50 dollars and now will have to spend $75 for another book to see the videos, study guides and practice tests. Go straight to cengage to purchase. Not a happy experience for a college student!

Well written textbook

I ordered this textbook because it was required for and online class. It is one of the most interesting textbooks I've read though. It has lots of direct quotes and interesting facts. In my opinion reads kind of like a newspaper. I honestly don't like the idea of online teachers just assigning a chapter to read, but this book exceptional as textbooks go. I also like the online resources that come with it. The chapter quizzes have been especially helpful.

Very good set of puzzles-- maybe a little tough for kids

I bought this for my kids, and we work through the problems together-- but for a bright 10 yr old and his 8 yr old brother, these are pretty tough. For their dad-- they're still pretty tough! So if you buy this for kids make sure you either have mensa members or you're able to work with them, or else it may be frustrating.

Well written, clear answers, and interesting puzzles. Overall, a very solid book.

eBook Digital Lesson files - Calm down everyone!

This training book, to my mind, achieves exactly what it sets out to and does it well. It's an alternative for users who don't want to plow through a software manual and want to just start using the program. It's a 'learn by do' approach. For practically minded or creative people, this is a great way to get started with After Effects. The projects are really only B or C grade from an artistic point of view, but they're stimulating enough and it's really about the possibilities and seeing how you achieve things that your imagination can conjure. To make really cool stuff you need to visit the websites of advanced designers's tutorial [...]

This book is beautifully laid out, very clear and logical and fun to work through, even for those familiar with the program - a lot has been added in the last few editions.

So anyway, on to the eBook lesson file issue that is causing such controversy on Amazon. This solution is good for all Classroom in a Book editions of CS5 programs. The good thing is that the digital lesson files are there and fully included with each Classroom in a Book eBook for CS5.

All Adobe Classroom in a Book Tutorials

All Adobe Classroom in a Book tutorials are well written and are designed primarily for the new user of that particular program. The one thing the books don't give you, that you must supply yourself, is patience! If you think you're going to open the book, do a few things and move on, you're wrong from the start. If you are patient and understand programs like PhotoShop, Premiere, After Effects etc won't be quickly learned, you'll do well. You must follow each instructive step to the letter and it will work. Believe me, they're not going to publish a book that hasn't been reviewed and re-reviewed many times for errors. You must be patient and read everything to the letter and do it to the letter. Don't move on to the next step until you can do the step you're on. You need to do each lesson more than once by following the book, then you do it yourself without the book. If you do something wrong, refer back to the book. Don't move on to the next lesson until you are sure you are "competent" in the lesson you are on. You won't learn any of these programs overnight. I learned PhotoShop well by reading the book carefully, following each step as outlined and then re-doing it several times. Then when I was sure I understood that lesson, I moved on to the next one. Please, don't blame well written books for your own impatience. I know we are in the age of "entitlement" where the thought is everything should happen "now", but the real world isn't like that. Learn some patience first and then and only then, will you be able to follow any Classroom in a Book series.

Take your time with this

I agree with the other reviewers in general as to this being a decent book for learning AF and doing it by lessons. But each of us learns differently so for me the best way was to go very slowly and do exactly as described in each lesson plan. When I say exactly, I mean make sure your layout, panels, etc. as well as where each panel is docked look like in the lessons. By a few lessons into the book, the author instructs you to do something and he doesn't re-explain it over and over (it is assumed that you know what step to take and the author states this in the beginning of the book) otherwise it would take up book space and lesson time repeating something over and over. Expect 2-3 times depending on the steps, lesson.

It can be overwhelming if you skip something and thus it can be frustrating when you don't see the same results (of the lesson). Say if you use your own Text font for example instead of the Text font used in the lesson, then you may get off-track and thus not see the results as the lessons was designed. I used Text fonts as an example because you may not see the same applied Effect(s) as was used in the lesson. Also, I tried to step forward on some steps and thus got lost in the end (my fault).

The more I have been using AF, the more everything has come together and I can see how the steps I take results in the final desired outcome. To me, the book was a great way to learn AF. But it's not going to teach me everything; I use other tools (media, etc.) to learn much more.

Laugh while you learn important things about testing!

A must-read for software testers at all experience levels, in all contexts. This book has Evil metrics! It has great cartoons! It's hilarious, while making excellent points. Sample: (answer to question about certifications): "...I will not say “do not take it”. It is your money, consequently, your choice. "

And it's pragmatic. For example, on getting involved in projects early, don't start writing up testing strategies and plans, but reflect on what value you can add, think about project risks, avoid wasting your time if you can't add enough value.

Dear Evil Tester is thought-provoking, like the answer to "Why do we have labels?" "Use normal dictionary words", what an interesting idea! The author even channels Dr. Seuss.

My favorite parts are when Evil Tester shares his own experiences. It's good to know other people have fallen into and struggled out of the same pitfalls as I have. If you're still early in your testing career, these stories could help you *avoid* the pitfalls!

I'm sad he doesn't recommend any of the books I co-authored, nevertheless, I recommend Dear Evil Tester to you.

Preface

Our primary motivation in writing this book is to share our working experience to bridge the gap between the knowledge of industry gurus and newcomers to the spoken language processing community. Many powerful techniques hide in conference proceedings and academic papers for years before becoming widely recognized by the research community or the industry. We spent many years pursuing spoken language technology research at Carnegie Mellon University before we started spoken language R&D at Microsoft. We fully understand that it is by no means a small undertaking to transfer a state-of-the-art spoken language research system into a commercially viable product that can truly help people improve their productivity. Our experience in both industry and academia is reflected in the context of this book, which presents a contemporary and comprehensive description of both theoretic and practical issues in spoken language processing. This book is intended for people of diverse academic and practical backgrounds. Speech scientists, computer scientists, linguists, engineers, physicists, and psychologists all have a unique perspective on spoken language processing. This book will be useful to all of these special interest groups.

Spoken language processing is a diverse subject that relies on knowledge of many levels, including acoustics, phonology, phonetics, linguistics, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse. The diverse nature of spoken language processing requires knowledge in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, syntax, and psychology. There are a number of excellent books on the subfields of spoken language processing, including speech recognition, text-to-speech conversion, and spoken language understanding, but there is no single book that covers both theoretical and practical aspects of these subfields and spoken language interface design. We devote many chapters systematically introducing fundamental theories needed to understand how speech recognition, text-to-speech synthesis, and spoken language understanding work. Great overview of all things speech in one tome.

A good comprehensive overview of all things needed to know speech processing as of 2001. Once-in-a-decade book. Makes a great senior- or graduate-level textbook.

Errata: p.38 "ax" schwa sound is FIRST syllable of "ago", not second. High/(neutral)/low and front/(neutral)/back cannot be four binary systems, because it's impossible to have a [+high, +low] or a [+front, +back] vowel. They are two trinary systems. You can represent them by four binary systems if you want to pervert the notation, but you should not call them that.

A classic and comprehensive resource

This book is a comprehensive overview of most of the major topics associated with speech processing. Divided into five main sections, the book is well structured with a clear division of concerns. The title, "Spoken Language Processing", may be misleading to some as language processing topics only accounts for one section of the book.

The first two sections cover the fundamental theories that should be understood before embarking in-depth into a study of speech processing. This may seem an obvious approach but many texts do not follow this pattern making their use as reference tomes limited. Separating background theory from its use is also useful in that it allows a rigorous approach to its description. Too often texts give a hurried imprecise overview of theories used before launching into a long and complex use of the theory; losing the reader instantly in a quagmire of formulae.

The first two sections of the book deals with background material, material that the reader should at least understand the key concepts of. The first section concentrates on speech in general (including production and perception), probability and statistics, and pattern classification. These last two topics mentioned are both important parts of the book and are dealt with in their own chapters. Both are well written with the right amount of explanation and background. Much of the remainder of the book expects at least some familiarity with the material presented here. These chapters, like all chapters in the book finish with a section entitled, "Historical Perspective and Further Reading". The inclusion of recommended further reading, in addition to the vast number of references appearing in each chapter, make the book as a whole a very good starting point for any work in speech processing.

The second section concerns itself with the DSP topics which relate to speech processing. In this section the reader will find everything from FFTs to multi-rate signal processing and speech signal representations to speech coding. Again the section is well written and the reader is not forced to refer to other texts to understand what is written. If a topic is not expanded upon here then it is an indication that is not dealt further in any great depth in the remainder of the book.

The third section of the book covers speech recognition and is probably the section which will find most use with many readers. This section is very thorough in its treatment of the subject. It starts immediately with a discussion of Hidden Markov Models which is almost exclusively the method employed in the pattern matching stage of speech recognition. Any algorithms that are mentioned are also detailed which really make the book useful. In fact algorithms are presented throughout the book making it a practical reference as much as a theoretical one. This is important because there is a big jump from understanding theory to being able to implement an algorithm to exploit that theory. Other topics covered include an excellent chapter on environmental robustness with one of the best discussions of microphones I have seen. Language modelling and search algorithms are given a thorough treatment. I would like to have seen more detailed information on front-end processing and endpoint detection, as this remains a critical stage of the recognition process. Perhaps the level of detail reflects the fact that this is currently a hot research topic with potential for significant advancement.

Section four, on text-to-speech processing, is a good overview of the field and better than any book I've seen on the subject. It shows numerous block diagrams of what you need to build such a system and gives numerous algorithms in pseudocode.
